But it wasn’t always this way.
When I first started out, I worked in tax law, and it sucked. I could see how the tradition, apathy and egos that characterise our industry were stifling progress. The long hours, rigid practice and unreasonable expectations were suffocating my passion for law, and I wanted out.
I lasted just a few years before I decided to start my own law firm, so I could do things my way. My way meant utilising the best of technology to improve operational efficiency. It meant delivering a better client experience through legible and accessible information. It meant having fun at the office, and being ruthlessly protective of my life outside of it.
It wasn’t long before I saw an opportunity, and launched Legal Beagle, one of the first firms in New Zealand to offer online legal services as a core part of business.
Legal Beagle would never have happened if I hadn’t challenged the norm and thought about law practice differently. It would never have succeeded if I hadn’t remained steadfast in my commitment to progressive and creative solution development. Through the highs and lows of launching and scaling a pioneering online legal solution, I’ve learned what works – the hard way.
I launched Automio to help other legal entrepreneurs – those thinking differently alongside me – change the face of the legal industry as we know it. The blueprint I developed through my own experiences is helping me build a squad of savvy lawyers who are, slowly but surely, changing the way the world thinks about law. Key to that is having fun.
Lawyers support clients through some of the toughest challenges they’ll ever go through in life. If we allow it, the daily grind could easily become all doom and gloom. For those of us who have gone out on our own, we have the added challenges of trying to grow a business, manage a team and balance our personal lives on top of our client work.
But drudgery is the enemy of creativity and progress. To do things better, we need to think differently, which requires a refreshed mindset and a new approach to work. It requires a little bit of fun to keep us above the grind, and thinking big.
If we want to truly change the landscape of our industry in the face of technological advancement and evolving client expectations, we need to be it to see it. Automio exists to provide a headstart to law firm owners ready to take on the business challenges of tomorrow.
